After the debacle on Tuesday, we have been finding the moments of happiness by looking for light in the darkness…the last 24 hours have brought new sedation medications that have given us very occasional glimpses of the G that we know and love, who opens his eyes for brief moments and instantly raises his arms, not to pull out the tube in his airway that he knows is keeping breath in his body, but to give and receive hugs. He has given some hand squeezes, a couple of thumbs-up, a tiny wave of his hand, one finger-pointing, and a few head nods and shakes to communicate to the staff and us, providing us all with much-needed reassurance that he’s still there, through mostly-closed eyes. He is here, he is stable, and he is so kind as to offer to share his blanket to cover my cold feet as I sit vigil with him (and catch up on work.) We are grateful for the outpouring of support we have received in the form of food, coffee, chocolate, tea, and bubbly water. Keep it coming, folks, we’re going to be here a while.
