How was the day? Well, if Giacomo could speak, I’m fairly sure he would turn to one of our favorite apps, the “Word of the Day,” and call out this word: incommodious. He was stable but clearly not loving the day, as I think his 8 days here is starting to wear on him, with the constant tweaking of sedation, in an attempt to ward off of ICU psychosis, a thing I was unaware existed until I asked, “Is it just me, or does it seem like G is playing that game where you stare at the ceiling and point, trying to get others to fall for it and follow your gaze?” (oh, and I have totally fallen for it. A bunch of times.) He is now on some antipsychotic meds that have left him with his eyes open all day and night, though he seems to be asleep. He did get a blood transfusion today, as his hemoglobin dipped pretty low and we are gearing up for surgery later this week, so some extra blood on board is likely to be a good thing. His favorite part of the day, again if he could speak, I think would be his fancy breathing treatments that I call a lung massage, but they call a MetaNeb, which have improved his respiratory function on the day, a huge win to get him over this infection and get him ready for a spiffy new airway.
